Dark Poultry Meat and Some Seafood May Provide Cardiovascular Benefits!

Researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center state that a nutrient found in the dark meat of poultry may lower the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in women with high cholesterol!

This finding may prove to be extremely useful as high cholesterol is linked with a number of illnesses.
The study was published in the European Journal of Nutrition evaluated the effect of taurine on coronary heart disease (taurine is found in dark poultry meat and in some seafood naturally). The findings stated that women with high cholesterol had a significantly lower chance of developing CHD when their diet contained an abundance of taurine vs those whose diets did not.

It is important to note that these results were not found in women with low cholesterol - taurine does not lower the risk of CHD in women with low cholesterol.
Coronary Heart Disease is the leading killer of American adults - causing 1 in 5 deaths. It occurs as a result of plaque build up inside the arteries that nourish the heart thus reducing blood flow to the myocardium (heart muscle tissue). This results in necrosis of the tissue and an inability of certain areas to fulfill their pumping duty. The end result is usually heart failure.
The findings of this research make it explicit that taurine does not have overall cardioprotective properties. However, it did indicate that in women with high cholesterol a diet rich in taurine were 60% less likely to develop or die from CHD. A massive benefit for people with cholesterol problems.
Dietary changes should of course be made to lower cholesterol levels, however, taurine should still be increased (for women suffering from high cholesterol). It should be ingested either in whole foods (dark poultry, seafood etc) or can be supplemented (click here for taurine supplements).
Due to the sample used, 80% caucasian females, further testing is required to see if there are benefits for men, also. If this is the case and these results can be replicated again and again by other independent scientists then taurine supplementation may become a tool in the fight against coronary heart disease in people with high cholesterol.
